OTTAWA — The main federal political parties appear able to do for donors what the Canada Revenue Agency was struggling Wednesday to do for taxpayers: protect personal information online.
Tests run on the party websites through an online security tool called SSL Lab Server Test, suggest that they are not vulnerable to the HeartBleed attack. The Conservative and Liberal fundraising sites scored high on security — an A- and A, respectively — and the NDP scored a B, meaning it had at least one minor “vulnerability” although it was safe from Heartbleed.
Heartbleed is a recently discovered online security loophole that allows undetected access to encrypted information, such as usernames, passwords and financial information required by secure websites.
Spokespeople for the Conservative and Liberal parties confirmed their online donation tools are secure. An NDP official said the party was aware of some technical issues and was working on them.
